Q. What skills do I need to be a duty officer?
A. You need to be able to work in a team with one other duty officer in a busy office. You must be able to make and answer telephone calls with clients and drivers. You must be able to operate a simple card index system and write details legibly.
Q. Are there any age requirements for duty officers?
A. Clevedon care does not usually recruit duty officers who are older than 75 on commencing their duties. Duty officers are not expected to continue beyond their 85th birthday.
Q. Will I be required to operate a computer?
A. Clevedon Care currently operates a card index system. Communication is via phone and WhatsApp.
Q. How often will I be on duty?
A. That depends on you and your availability but probably between once a month and once a week.
Q. How long is each shift?
A. Our office hours are 9.30am - 3pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and 9.30am - 12.30pm on Friday. Morning shifts are from 9.30am - 12.30pm. Afternoon shifts are from 12.45pm - 3.00pm. You will need to allow some time before and after for preparation and tidying up.
Q. Will I need to work at the weekend?
A. The office is normally closed at weekends.
Q. What about holidays?
A. The office is generally closed for a period over Christmas, Easter and other Bank holidays. At other times you can inform us when you wish to take holidays and we will adjust the duty roster.
Q. What if I can't do a shift at the last moment?
A. We encourage duty officers to fulfil their commitments as this reduces the inconvenience for others. If it is unavoidable, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can make alternative arrangements.
Q. Can I do the job from home?
A. The role is carried out at Clevedon Care's office in the YMCA, Marson Road, Clevedon. This enables clients and drivers to connect with Clevedon Care face to face if they wish.
Q. Do you have anywhere for me to park?
A. There is no suitable parking in the immediate vicinity, but it is possible to use public car parks within 5 minutes’ walk from the office.
Q. Will I receive any training?
A. All duty officers receive training before they undertake duties and are then paired with an experienced duty officer initially.
Q. Do duty officers have to be drivers for Clevedon Care as well?
A. There is no obligation to drive as well but it is possible to do both.
